The question nobody asks about office software

Organisations in Qatar spend a great deal of effort deciding where their databases live and comparatively little on where their documents go. Yet the document is usually the sensitive artefact. A contract draft, a board pack, a salary schedule, a patient summary, a tender response: these are the files that matter, and on a mainstream cloud suite every one of them is uploaded, indexed, and processed on infrastructure owned by a foreign company and governed by foreign law.

The AI assistant makes this sharper. When an assistant summarises a document or drafts a paragraph, the document content is sent to a model running on someone else's servers. The convenience is real. So is the exposure.

What running locally actually means

ForeThought is a desktop application. Files open from your disk, are edited in memory on your machine, and are written back to your disk. Nothing is uploaded as a precondition of opening, editing, or saving.

The part that surprises people is the AI. ForeThought's assistant runs on your device too. It reads the document you have open, from local memory, and produces its output locally. This has three consequences worth stating plainly:

  • It works with no internet at all: on a flight, at a client site, in a facility where network access is restricted.
  • There are no per document or per query cloud fees, because there is no cloud call to bill.
  • Data residency requires no configuration, because nothing leaves the machine to have a residency.

The gap we are not hiding

An on-device model is smaller than a frontier model running in a datacentre. For drafting, rewriting, summarising, formula explanation, and translation between Arabic and English, the difference is not one most users notice in daily work. For an open-ended research question or a long chain of reasoning across many documents, a large hosted model is still better.

We think that trade is the right one for the documents that matter, and the wrong one for general-purpose questions. ForeThought is built for the first category. If your work is mostly the second, a hosted assistant is the more practical fit, and we would rather say so than oversell.

Arabic is not an afterthought

Every app in ForeThought supports Arabic with proper right to left layout, alongside English. This is worth being specific about, because "supports Arabic" covers a wide range of quality in practice.

  • Right to left editing is native in documents, sheets, and slides, not a text-direction toggle bolted onto a left to right layout engine.
  • A document can mix Arabic and English without formatting collapsing at the boundary.
  • The AI assistant reads and writes in both languages, so a bilingual report keeps assistant support throughout.
  • The interface itself is available in Arabic and English.

Six apps, one launcher

ForeThought is a suite rather than a single editor: a word processor, a spreadsheet, a presentation editor, a PDF tool, a markdown editor, and an AI assisted mail client. Each has its own assistant built in and tuned to that document type, so the spreadsheet assistant understands formulas and the mail assistant understands correspondence.

The mail client pairs naturally with FalconMail, our Qatar email service, though it speaks standard protocols and works with other providers.

Offline software and PDPPL

Qatar's Personal Data Privacy Protection Law (Law No. 13 of 2016) requires organisations processing personal data to apply appropriate protective measures and remain accountable for that data. Documents are where a great deal of regulated personal data actually sits: identity documents, medical notes, payroll files, client records.

Software that never transmits document content narrows the exposure to the device itself, which is infrastructure the organisation already controls and already secures. That is not compliance on its own. Compliance is a programme covering retention, access control, breach notification, and staff training. But it removes an entire category of question about third party processors, sub-processors, and cross-border transfer, because there is no third party in the processing path.

How to evaluate an office suite for sensitive work

Four questions worth asking any vendor:

  1. When I open a document, does its content leave this machine? Ask specifically about the AI features, which are often exempted from the general answer.
  2. Which company is legally accountable for the data, and under which country's law can it be compelled to disclose?
  3. Does the software function with the network disconnected, and which features degrade?
  4. What is the pricing model when usage grows: per seat, per document, or per AI query?
